Who’s got time for a get less poor slowly scheme?
People who start working from home do it because they need money right now. It’s a sad fact that get rich quick schemes more often than not prey on those who are in the most desperate circumstances.
Working online at home is always going to suck in the beginning because it takes a while to establish a system of getting things done and an income (even a modest one) flowing. Fortunately there are some things you can do to make life suck less (and speed things up a little) while this is going on:
- Take walks with your kids. Walking is (so far as I know) free, and your kids will need to vent their energy just as much as you do. Even if it’s just a quick circle around the block it’ll be enough to clear your head and get your blood circulating.
- Carry your camera around with you. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen something interesting and wished that I could take a quick snap shot so that I could blog about it later.
- Get while the getting is good. WordPress has a feature that lets you schedule posts to appear at a later date or time, go ahead and write posts ahead of time when your creative juices are flowing and schedule them out over a few days.
- It’s okay to reach for the low hanging fruit. You ask a friend or two to visit your site without being considered spammy, or tweet a new post from time to time, or create and print out some bookmarks with your url on it and leave them in strategic places, for that matter have your url silk screened (or hand painted if you’re artistically inclined) on your kids’ t-shirts.
- When possible use your computer to make calls. Not only will you save a bit of money on long distance, but you will have your hands free to type notes or visit sites when you’re on hold. (I use Skype. And I’m on hold as of this writing.)
- Make friends, not just network contacts or readers. If you start thinking about other people as commodities you are going to burn out, quickly.
