If Something isn’t Working…

..then quit trying to make it work.

I was reading in one of my favorite blogging forums this particular post where someone said you must have a certain thing with lots of other certain things in order to accomplish something and that was the only way.

Period. End of discussion.

I wanted to reply but didn’t, mainly because I know better than to publicly confront people on their firmly held beliefs. That sort of thing just never ends well on forums.

But this isn’t about my imagined reply (which would have been brilliant) but about the ideas that we so dearly hold onto, the ideas that seem to make so much sense and yet might be the same things that hold us back.

This post is about finding your own way to do things. I didn’t really decide (at least not consciously) to do things in defiance of the way things must be done. Sometimes I even follow directions and listen to advice, but when the advice isn’t working for me I try other things.

That’s how I found out that you don’t absolutely have to have a certain thing with a number of certain other things to accomplish something. In fact, when I gave up trying to have that certain thing and just focused on doing another thing, I started actually being successful.
